Tables and dice, how nice
Loot tables. I’m drafting up some of the weapon loot tables. It’s the hard slog part of creating tables of weapons (and modification tags, this is a LUMEN-Looter Shooter after all!)
Anyway, I’ve got a few tables with 6 entries, a few with 9 entries and an 11 row table. All rolled with 1-2 D6 for simplicities sake. If only maths in high school was pitched to me in the context of games… Anyway! a 6-row table is easy, 1D6: equal chance of each entry. The 9-row table is a bit trickier: 2D6 where 1D6 is counted 1-3 & 4-6 while the other is counted 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, I think that’s still even odds. Finally the 11-row table, this is a 2D6 where the result is added, so results of 2-12.
This is where the maths comes in.
Here’s a breakdown of the combinations for each result - there’s only one way to get 2 or 12 each, and the combinations increase as we meet in the middle at the result of 7. Basically, I’m having serious flashbacks to all those evenings playing Settlers of Catan.
So, here’s the 2D6 table of Firearms. Each type of firearm has 2 entries except for the centre row, 7 Assault Rifles. Now, anecdotally from my experience playing Settlers it’s results of 5-9 that are most common. With this in mind I tried to lay out the weapons in a way that I think is reasonable for rolling results.
N/B. I tried to make this table in markdown but Itch doesn’t seem to support that part of markdown in the editor, so here’s an image of the table instead.
LMGs and Marksman Rifles are the least common on this table and that feels right because they’re also the big hitters. Funnily enough, the statistically most likely result due to most single combinations would be 7, Assault Rifles, but because this table is (not quite) doubled SMGs have a greater chance of being rolled. I could just make it a d6 table, but I wanted to have a bit more fun and thought behind rolling for firearms.

It was brought to my attention that I sort of missed the point with the doubling up of everything but the middle row… So, I’ve amended it to be the following, as suggested by Binary Star Games over on Discord:
